A passion for technology - meet Aart (Software Engineer)

Updated: Sep 17

"From a young age, I was fascinated by how things worked. As a teenager, I was already taking apart devices, always looking for the how and why. In high school, I chose the Science & Technology profile, and my graduation project focused on charging and discharging NiCad batteries. In addition, I was active in model racing, a hobby that let me experiment and tinker with anything that had wheels."

"I'm now working at Emoss for the second time, and it still feels like coming home. What attracts me here is the freedom I have to find my own path in the work. Emoss is a small-scale company without too much compartmentalized thinking. That's ideal for a creative engineer like me, who prefers to learn by doing rather than being stuck in a rigid structure. Here, I can try out my ideas without anyone 'looking over my shoulder.' That freedom is priceless."

The beginning of my career in technology

"Technology is in my blood, but it took me a while to realize that cars are really my thing. I lived on Texel, and years ago, we started a model racing club with a few friends. That was my first serious encounter with technology. Physics has always interested me, and if I didn’t understand something, I’d look it up or ask my teachers. Of course, a lot went wrong, but that’s exactly how you learn."

"I studied Automotive Technology. Studying never went by the book for me; I always had jobs on the side and was mainly interested in hands-on work. One of the projects I'm proud of is a mobile fuel cell system that generates electricity by reacting hydrogen with oxygen. Innovations like that continue to fascinate me. In the end, I found the education system to be too theoretical and lacking in practical work, so I decided to find my own path."

The path to Emoss

"My path to Emoss went through Plastisol, a company where I worked before. Plastisol took over Emoss, and that’s how I ended up here. What immediately appealed to me about Emoss was the freedom to develop, learn, and, in a way, also play with technology. Everything within my area of interest: system communication and integration. Here, I can really express myself."

"In my current role as Senior/Lead System Engineer, I’m responsible for developing new system software. I don’t do this alone; I work closely with different departments within Emoss to define and develop the new platform. Additionally, I’m often the last in line for complex service issues, since I’ve been here for so long and have built up a lot of knowledge."

Working at Emoss: more than just a job

"What I enjoy most about working at Emoss is the combination of the work itself and the people around me. The work is fully within my area of interest, and I rarely see anything come along that suits me better. But it’s really the colleagues who make Emoss special. Everyone has a natural interest in technical development, and there are always a few personalities that shake things up socially. That ensures it’s never boring here."

Technical challenges and innovation

"At Emoss, I’ve worked on all sorts of interesting projects, from designing body electronics for a fiberglass composite minibus to electrifying military vehicles. The variety is immense, and that keeps it exciting. One of the biggest challenges I’ve worked on was developing a stable end product with components that weren’t fully developed yet. That requires a lot of adaptability and creativity."

"Emoss holds a unique position in the market, especially in vehicle communication. We’re always working with the latest technology, and that makes the work here even more challenging and interesting."

Future plans and ambitions

"Looking to the future, I want to continue growing as an experienced Lead System Engineer. My ambition isn’t in management, but in further developing system software. I want to keep using my knowledge and experience to elevate Emoss to a higher level. The work doesn’t feel like work to me; it feels like a hobby where I can channel my passion. And that’s exactly what I was looking for in my career."
